Millennials, Google has an advise for you

As the most widely-used search engine in the world, Google needs to stay on its toes when it comes to eliminating malware and phishing websites from its massive search index. Though the company does a lot behind-the-scenes to take care of malware concerns, it also keeps users aware about how they can tackle these issues from their end.

In order to inform web users (especially youngsters) about these attacks, the company, like every year, celebrated 'Safe Internet Day' on February 6. We had a word with Sunita Mohanty, Google India's director of trust and safety, who shared her thoughts about millennials and the way they use the internet.

According to Mohanty, young web users should be conscious about giving out their personal information online and leaving their footprints across different websites, especially social networking ones

She said that young users should be 'socially conscious' about the websites they open and feed personal information on. They should also be made aware of exactly what information they are supposed to provide or not provide online.

"For millennials, the most important thing is to be responsible on the internet, which is by not leaving any digital footprints that may come back to haunt them later."

Mohanty further added that a lot of times, youngsters become revolutionary on the web and leave a lot of information, all of which comes back after years when they are applying for a job.

She said that by "being conscious about what you leave on the internet will go a long way in keeping your relationship with the internet safe."

Not only did she talk about youngsters leaving bits and pieces of their personal information online, but also explained how Google is working hard when it comes to online payments made for Google Play Store purchases

Google, on its end, uses a 'risk engine' to catch any suspicious transactions in seconds. The company is also educating people on how they can ensure that their in-app transactions are safe.

For now, one of the Google's primary focuses seems to be bringing the 'next billion' users on the web. The company is not only helping in giving more users access to the internet, but also explaining them how to browse safely.

This is a part of what we heard about Google's attempt to make the web safer. Recently, the company also explained how it takes care of millions of apps available on Play Store. While all these initiatives by Google are appreciable, we can only expect the company to improve its security features even more in the coming years.

Alibaba Reportedly in Talks With Telecom Players to Provide Free Internet in India

Chinese Internet giant Alibaba may be the next major player after Facebook to try its hands on providing free Internet in India. A new report claims that the company is in talks with telecom operators as well as Wi-Fi providers to offer free Internet services in the country.

"We will definitely look at the opportunity to work together with service providers or even some Wi-Fi providers. We are trying to offer lower cost data to users and better connectivity, even free of cost connectivity. Wi-Fi providers and other players can be potentials and we are in talk," Jack Huang, President of Overseas Business, Alibaba Mobile Business told Business Insider India.

Alibaba is reportedly still working on the plans around its free Internet service in India and is still in talks with "potential partners." The Chinese company is considering providing free Internet services to states that have connectivity problems. "We actually think in geographic way because in India not every state is suffering from connectivity problem so we will focus more on providing this kind of services to states that are suffering more and also we will have comprehensive analysis on already existing consumers who will actually need this kind of service," added Huang.

It's worth mentioning that Alibaba isn't the first to work on providing free Internet in the country as Facebook earlier launched its Internet.org and Free Basic projects with similar aims. However, both of Facebook's initiatives met with heavy backlash in India from "net neutrality" advocates, who claimed that Free Basics only allowed access to selected websites thus violating the principle that the entire Internet should be available to everyone on equal terms.

These startups can help you find a date on Valentine's Day

Demand for letter-writing startups is on the upswing around the upcoming Valentine's Day.

In May 2016, four friends at a New Delhi cafe noticed that everyone around them were consumed by social media and were having multiple conversations at the same time. They realized that oldworld, one-to-one communication was lost in technology. The foursome--software engineer Sumit Jain, techie Sumanyu Varma, lawyer Lalit Narolia and jewellery entrepreneur Sandeep Manna -- decided to launch a startup for people to rediscover the romance of the written word.

With an initial investment of about Rs 50,000 for setting up a website and a payment gateway, they started LetteraMail. They charge Rs 99-150 a letter and write them after work. Over the next eight months, the startup received more than 3,000 orders, most of them from southern India for love letters. They hired two freelance writers, paying them up to Rs 40 per letter. "We put all our earnings back into business operations. We broke even recently and hope to make profits this Valentine's Day. This traction will help us find external funding," said Varma.

Gone are the days when reading someone's personal letter was considered disrespectful. A multitude of online platforms professionally draft and post your letters -- from romantic compositions to resignations. They cater to millennials who prefer the personal touch of snail mail but outsource the job due to paucity of time and because letterwriting has become a lost art.

"I have never written a single letter all my life. Like most people in my generation, I am good with verbal expression but cannot put emotions down in words," said Vijayeta Sharma, 29, an operations officer at IIIT-B who approached Bengaluru-based The Indian Handwritten Letter Company (TIHLC) to write personalized letters to her husband.

TIHLC co-founder Anubhav Ankit said that all their seven writers have day jobs and manage their quota of five letters a day after work. "They find it exciting to get out of the corporate routine and be a part of someone else's world," he said. TIHLC has penned 4,400 letters since its launch in April 2016, about half of them romantic ones.

The writers are based in different states and write in nine Indian languages, including Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Odia. "We chose this quicker and cost-effective model so that the order is fulfilled by the writer closest to the client," said Ankit. The startup receives 40 orders on a regular day and 100 a day around Valentine's Day in February.Charges range from Rs 99 to upward of Rs 2,500 a letter, depending on the level of personalization.

The services are entirely tech-dependent, making infrastructure investments almost negligible.

CallyAlly's founders Shiv Sharma and Prahlad Singh, for instance, are two techies based out of Pune. Even with Prahlad temporarily shifting to Germany for an official project, the work remains uninterrupted.

For sustainable business, these ventures tie up with companies seeking to issue bulk handwritten letters to consumers, clients and employees. "Handwritten letters create brand loyalty and recall value and hence are in great demand," said Sharma, who is currently in talks with four companies
